Nagpur: As the festive season of Diwali approaches, it's time for individuals with allergies and asthma to take proactive steps to protect their health. Not only do the traditional fireworks pose a risk, but the pre-Diwali weather change and clean-up activities in almost every household may bring problems for patients with asthma, allergies, and other respiratory symptoms.
Dr Akash Balki, a pulmonologist with specialisation in asthma and respiratory problems, said, "The combination of Diwali pollution and the changing weather can be a perfect storm for those with allergies and asthma. The pollutants can trigger inflammation in the airways, leading to coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing."
He also offered valuable insights on managing asthma during Diwali. "Firstly, minimise dust exposure. It is a common practice to clean houses before Diwali. Unfortunately, this can stir up dust mites and trigger asthma attacks. To avoid this, stay out of rooms while they are being vacumed or swept," he said.
Dr Balki advised caution with festive foods too. "Diwali often involves indulging in sweets and fried foods. However, a high intake of refined grains, processed foods, and sugary treats can worsen asthma symptoms. So, limit sweets, especially those containing milk, which can be particularly inflammatory," he said.
Not only pulmonologists, but general physicians are also insisting on the use of masks during Diwali. "Smoke inhalation and airborne particles can irritate the airways and trigger an attack. If you have respiratory issues and still want to go out, cover your nose and mouth with a mask and limit your time outdoors, especially in the evenings when pollution levels are typically higher during Diwali," said Dr Manish Jadhav.
He also stressed the importance of medication. "Controller inhalers can decrease the chances of having an asthma attack. Follow your doctor's prescription and take the advised dosage daily. Since Diwali has many airborne triggers, keep your reliever inhalers readily available for quick symptom relief," Dr Jadhav added.
