Mangaluru: A man convicted of rape was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by sixth additional district and sessions court judge, Kantharaju SV, here on Friday.
The convict, Jagannath K Mogera,38, from Kutruppadi village in Puttur taluk, was found guilty of raping a woman in a case registered at Puttur Rural police station on Feb 25, 2016.
The accused entered the woman's house under the pretext of asking for water, and when she was alone, committed the crime. He threatened to kill her if she told anyone. He continued to threaten her, and raped her multiple times. When she became pregnant, her family reported it to the police.
Inspector Anil S Kulkarni conducted the investigation and filed the chargesheet. During the trial, nine witnesses were examined, and 20 documents were identified. The judge, upon finding the accused guilty, sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 under Section 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
In case of non-payment of the fine, an additional two months of imprisonment was ordered. The judge also directed the District Legal Services Authority to provide compensation to the victim. Public prosecutor Choudhari Motilal argued the case for the prosecution.
