Kolkata: Schools in and around the city have declared a holiday or shifted to online mode following the state order regarding Cyclone Dana. The school education department issued a notice on Tuesday saying physical classes should be suspended in South and North 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, Hooghly, Howrah and Kolkata.
St Augustine’s Day School Shyamnagar principal Rodney Borneo said, “We have shifted online for three days.”
Schools like Assembly of God Church and South Point shifted to online mode while others, like St James, Bhavan’s, La Martiniere for Boys, La Martiniere for Girls, Don Bosco Park Circus and Liluah, and Abhinav Bharati High School, suspended classes.Sources said Bishop Paritosh Canning asked schools under Church of North India to keep classes suspended, attaching the govt order. Asian International School has declared a half day on Thursday and a holiday on Friday.
Modern High and South City International, will be open but have asked parents to decide if they want to send their wards. South City International School principal Satabdi Bhattacharjee said, “We have shifted some events to Monday.” DPS Megacity has deferred exams scheduled on Thursday and Friday.
Jadavpur University and the New Town campus of Presidency University will be shut till Friday. Presidency registrar Debajyoti Konar said, “Since the second campus falls under the jurisdiction of North 24 Paraganas, appropriate measures are being taken following the govt order.”
IIEST will be shut on Thursday and Friday. CU did not issue any notice since Kolkata was not mentioned in the order. Entrance exams for master’s courses will proceed according to schedule, an official said. AIDSO sent a letter to the VC requesting rescheduling of exams as students from other districts may find it difficult to reach the venue.
