Women employees in Bhubaneswar will now receive 12 additional days of casual leave annually to address menstrual health issues, resulting in a total of 27 days of casual leave alongside five days of special casual leave. This policy aims to create a more supportive work environment. However, some women express concerns about potential embarrassment due to the topic's social stigma.
BHUBANESWAR: Women employees will now get 12 more days of casual leave (CL) annually to address health issues related to menstruation, according to a notification issued by the CMO on Tuesday.
Earlier, women employees were entitled to 10 days of casual leave and five days of special casual leave annually. The 12 days will be in addition to the existing leaves.
Now women employees can avail 27 days of casual leave in a year while men will get 15 days of CL.
Deputy CM Pravati Parida had announced on Independence Day that women employees will be entitled to get one day of menstrual leave every month.
Women employees will be able to utilise the leave at the rate of one day per month. The CM emphasised the policy is aimed at creating a more supportive work environment for women employees, acknowledging the challenges they face due to their menstrual cycles.
Apart from Odisha, Kerala and Bihar have implemented menstrual leave policy.
“This is indeed a proactive move by the govt as many women experience severe discomfort, pain and fatigue during their periods and they need rest to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Allowing period leave can enhance our productivity,” said Lipika Samal, a govt employee.
Some women, however, felt this may lead to embarrassment in some offices. “Menstruation is still a taboo topic. If a woman takes period leave, then the whole office will know about her condition, which may cause embarrassment for her,” said Arati Nayak, another employee.
