Ashwin replaces Bumrah. Ravindra prods forward and defends the first one right back at the bowler. Too full, driven to long on for a single. A quick single to short square from Conway. Too full again, Ravindra gets an inside edge that lobs over short leg and falls into no man’s land. 

Washington continues. India in dire need of a wicket. Four!! Conway brings out the reverse sweep and gets it past third man for four. A good effort from Akash Deep to save a couple of runs at the boundary. Seven from the over. 

Bumrah to Ravindra. Punched off the back foot through wide mid off, Rohit does well to keep it to one. Four!! Short and wide, punched off the back foot through point for a boundary. 

Washington to Ravindra. Ravindra looks to cut a not-so-short delivery, hits it straight to third man. Over pitched, Ravindra jams the ball to long off for a single. 

Bumrah continues. Continues with the back of a length deliveries, Ravindra defends off the back foot. Searing yorker from Bumrah, Ravindra manages to keep it out. A single to gully rounds out the over. 

Washington with his ninth over. Slightly short outside off, Conway pushed to deep cover for a single. Ravindra gets a single to point to get off strike. 

Bumrah continues. Short of a length on the fifth stump, defended by Ravindra. Slightly fuller in length, defended to the offside. Four!! In the blockhole, Ravindra guides it through the gap in the cordon for a boundary. 

Washington from the other end. Ravindra turns a legstump delivery to the leg side and scampers across for two. Three runs from the over. 

Fifty for Conway! Drives the first ball after lunch through mid on for four to bring up his half century. Bumrah thuds Conway’s thigh pads as he looks to keep out a short of a length ball. Four!! Back of a length again, punched through cover for another boundary. Four!! Soft hands, guides it past gully for the third boundary of the over. Appeals for lbw from Bumrah. Not given, bowler suggests there could have been an inside edge. 

New Zealand slightly in front following the close of the first session. India will need more wickets to control the game before Tea. 

Washington with his second spell. The last ball was such a turner but seemed to have lot of height to it. However, a look back to the delivery revealed it would have gone to umpire’s call if India went with a review. And with that, the players take Lunch.

Ashwin catches Conway’s outside edge but it’s just outside Rohit’s reach at the slips. Conway takes a single to retain strike.

Jadeja with the ball. Five dots and a single to end the over.

Ashwin back and almost catches Young’s edge on the first ball. Sarfaraz thinks he heard something on that ball as Rohit Sharma takes a review. And it’s a spike on the ultra edge as the ball gets a nick off the glove. OUT! Young walks back for 18.

Jadeja continues. Good running from the batters as they take two on the last ball. Three off the over.

Ashwin continues. A couple of singles from the over as there was a chance of a run out on the last ball with Jadeja trying to run the batter at the non-striker’s end out.

Jadeja replaces Washington. Conway, after being denied by Gill at gully, gets his reverse-sweep right and finds the boundary for a FOUR. Five off the over.

Ashwin back. Dots at the start of the over followed by a couple of byes. A single to end the over.

Washington back. A single to start the over. FOUR! Young plays it straight to point for a boundary as the ball goes for the ropes without any resistance from the fielders.

Ashwin back. Couple of singles to start the over. Close! Conway tries to defend but gets an inside edge as the ball stops just under him.

Washington with his fifth. The off-break spinner continues to bowl great lengths as he completes another maiden over.

Ashwin back. Conway takes a single to bring up New Zealand’s 50. Sharp fielding from Jadeja at short third man as he stops Conway’s reverse-sweep. Three off the over.

Washington with his third. Full outside off, Conway drives to deep backward point for a single. Young defends off his backfoot to mid on. Fuller and more air, Young prods forward to defend. Stifled appeals from slip and short leg but no bat on that one from Young, bounces off the pad. 

Ashwin continues. Young looks to go back and cut but is beaten on the edge. Slower through the air, Young manages to keep it out. A couple to deep square for the right hander. Four!! A touch too short, Young punches through point for a boundary. 

Washy continues. Conway punches to deep cover and will collect two. Conway beaten on the outside edge. Turn and bounce after pitching in line. Slightly shorter, Conway cuts off the backfoot to get a single to deep point. Single to deep midwicket for Young to complete the over. 

Ashwin to Young. Slight turn as Young turns it to short cover. A single to deep cover takes Young off the mark. Conway punches a full one to long off for a single. Straightens a touch, takes the outside half of Young’s bat. Turning in this time, appeals for lbw but the ball would have gone down leg. 

Washington replaces Bumrah from the other end. Full on the stumps, Conway defends. Looks to paddle, hits it straight at Sarfaraz. A couple of balls slightly shorter, Conway goes on the backfoot to defend. 

Ashwin into the attack. Full on leg stump, Latham prods forward and defends to short mid wicket. On leg stump again, clipped to the leg side for a single. A quick single to mid on for Conway. WICKET!! Richard Illingworth raises his finger instantly. Straightened after pitching on leg and is caught in front.

Bumrah with his fourth over. Round the wicket to Latham, defended to cover for a single. Conway flicks one to deep fine for a couple. Slight nip in as Conway shoulders arms. Four!! A touch full outside off, driven through cover for a boundary. 

Akash Deep to Latham, full and wide, left alone. A quick single for Latham to mid on, dabs it and scampers across. Edged and four!! Full on line with the stumps, takes the edge but runs past gully for a boundary. Appeals for caught behind from Akash Deep but nothing from the slips. Came back in and beat Conway’s inside edge. 

Bumrah to Conway, on the pads but catches the outside half of his bat and rolls to point. Forces him to play at a couple, but he middles the defensive shots. Catches the inside half of his bat this time as he looked to drive. Another maiden. 

Akash Deep to Latham. Full outside off, defended right back. Latham defends a back of a length delivery to the offside for a quick single. Full and wide, Conway dangles his bat out but is beaten on the outside edge. Four!! Full again, this time Conway prods forward and drives it down the ground for a boundary. A single to point follows. Four!! Full on the stumps, Latham drives it past mid on for a boundary. 

Bumrah to Conway. Ohh! Prodigious swing from outside leg. Beats Conway’s outside edge. Similar line, Conway manages to smother it down. One that comes back in, Conway is upto it. Maiden over. 

Akash Deep with the second over. Full outside offstump, no real movement in the air. Latham lets it go. Edged and four! The soft hands helps it fall short and it runs through the gap between slip and gully for a boundary. Late movement again, clips Latham’s edge but falls short of gully.

A crucial first session coming up. New Zealand will hope to press home its early advantage after winning the toss. A score upwards of 300 will be a daunting prospect for India who will have to bat fourth on this pitch will looks like it’ll help the spinners from Day 1.

New Zealand wins the toss and opts to bat first!

“Not a lot of grass. Will spin as we expect at this part of the world. Really proud moment [winning the first test]. Our focus now turns to Pune here. Good opportunity with the bat first up. Santner in for the injured Henry,” says Tom Latham. 

“Would have batted first. About playing good cricket nevertheless. Fresh opportunity for us. We’ll do everything to bounce back. Bit drier than Bengaluru. Siraj, KL Rahul and Kuldeep miss out, Gill, Washington and Akash Deep in,” says Rohit.

Moments after the Indian team arrived at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Wednesday morning for its final training session ahead of the second Test against New Zealand, head coach Gautam Gambhir walked around the pitch to have a closer look.

As his assistant coaches joined in, Gambhir could be seen discussing a thing or two with the curators before heading towards the other end of the ground to oversee the nets session.

Following India’s eight-wicket defeat in the series opener in Bengaluru last week, the team management seems to be busy finding ways to negate the pace attack of the visiting side. No wonder, a bald, low-bounce black-soil pitch is set to be offered when the action gets underway on Thursday.
