Head coach Gambhir and the ‘boring’ side of Test cricket

Back in 2009, Gautam Gambhir played a marathon innings in Napier, facing 436 deliveries for his 137, to deny New Zealand a victory. The innings, spanning 643 minutes, still remains one of the talking points in the cricketing circuit.

But 15 years later, as he dons the India head coach’s hat, Gambhir has a different approach, where winning a Test match is the ultimate goal as playing out draws are often ‘boring’.

India has been aggressive since Gambhir’s takeover as coach. It won the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh even though rain abandoned nearly three days of play, and fought back against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

    PREVIEW

Moments after the Indian team arrived at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Wednesday morning for its final training session ahead of the second Test against New Zealand, head coach Gautam Gambhir walked around the pitch to have a closer look.

As his assistant coaches joined in, Gambhir could be seen discussing a thing or two with the curators before heading towards the other end of the ground to oversee the nets session.

Following India’s eight-wicket defeat in the series opener in Bengaluru last week, the team management seems to be busy finding ways to negate the pace attack of the visiting side. No wonder, a bald, low-bounce black-soil pitch is set to be offered when the action gets underway on Thursday.
