Hyderabad: BRS leaders have urged the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) to reject a proposed increase in electricity charges. They believe that this hike could harm the State’s economic growth.

Speaking to reporters after attending a public hearing, S Madhusudhana Chary, leader of the party in the Council, reminded everyone that before Telangana became a State, there were serious issues with power supply. However, after Telangana’s formation in 2014, under the leadership of KCR, the power sector saw significant improvements, with investments worth thousands of crores of rupees.

Madhusudhana Chary highlighted that Telangana’s power generation capacity increased from 7,000 megawatts to 24,000 megawatts. Transmission lines were strengthened, more substations and transformers were made available, and electricity was given for free to the agriculture sector. Additionally, the State provided quality electricity for households and ensured continuous power for industries, which helped boost agricultural production. He referred to this period as a “golden era” for Telangana’s power sector.

He further emphasized that the previous KCR government worked hard to improve the State’s wealth without raising electricity charges. However, the current government is now proposing a power tariff hike through the DISCOMs, which, according to Chary, could negatively impact the income of all people in both direct and indirect ways.
