Mumbai, 24th October 2024: A witness in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case has requested enhanced security, seeking at least 10 personnel under the Witness Protection and Security Act, 2017. The individual is expected to testify in the ongoing trial involving seven defendants and has submitted a plea to the court.
Previously, in August, the witness sought a court order for adequate police protection. He indicated that since his testimony against earlier defendants, his security had been diminished. Following this, the court instructed the police to ensure sufficient protection for him.
However, the witness returned to court on Tuesday, stating that his security situation remains unchanged. His new plea mentions that a committee was established following the court’s directives in August, which submitted a report to the relevant authorities, yet his security has not been improved.
In light of recent events, including the murder of former state minister Baba Siddiqui earlier this month, the witness emphasized the urgent need for heightened protection due to ongoing threats.
The court has instructed the police to respond to the plea, which is expected to be heard next on November 4.
On March 12, 1993, a series of 12 bomb blasts rocked the city, resulting in 257 fatalities and over 713 injuries. Two previous trials have been conducted, and the current trial addresses those arrested after these earlier proceedings.
In his prior request, the witness noted his significant role in the investigation and the previous trial, during which he was assigned approximately 25 guards, a number that has since been gradually reduced. He also mentioned receiving threats in 2007 and 2009.
The Maharashtra Witness Protection and Security Act, 2017, includes measures to ensure the safety of witnesses and their families involved in serious criminal cases.
