The Colorado League, which oversees high school mountain biking in the state, wrapped up its season this past weekend with the state championships, hosted by Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley near Glenwood Springs.

Carbondale’s Colorado Rocky Mountain School returned to the top, winning the Division 1 championship for the second straight year with 6,670 points. Boulder was second with 6,533, and Air Academy was third with 6,401.

Roaring Fork finished 12th and Glenwood Springs 14th in Division II, won by Durango. In Division III, the combined Aspen/Basalt team finished fourth, while the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy took the win.

CRMS’s Hazel Lazar was fourth in the girls varsity race, while her teammates Canyon Cherney and Lucas Berry were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the boys varsity race.

Volleyball

Aspen volleyball kept its postseason hopes alive Tuesday with a 3-2 win at Roaring Fork. The Rams fell to 9-11 overall, while AHS improved to 10-9 with just over a week remaining in the regular season. The Rams head to Cedaredge on Friday.

Basalt (3-9) did not play on Tuesday ahead of its game on Thursday at Aspen. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. inside the AHS gymnasium. The Skiers rallied for a 3-2 win at Basalt back on Sept. 24 in their first matchup.

In Class 3A, 36 teams will make the regional tournament, with the 12 regional champions advancing to state. Aspen was ranked No. 27 in the always changing CHSAANow.com seeding index as of Wednesday, giving the Skiers a good chance to make the postseason field.

Roaring Fork was No. 41 and Basalt No. 51 as of Wednesday afternoon.

Soccer

Aspen soccer’s playoff hopes remain alive after a 4-0 home win over Colorado Rocky Mountain School on Tuesday. CRMS fell to 1-7-1 overall and only has a Friday game at Roaring Fork remaining in the regular season.

The Skiers improved to 5-7-1 overall. AHS next plays on Thursday at Rifle (11-2-1), a likely must-win game with only a trip to non-league Grand Valley (5-7-1) on Saturday remaining after that. Aspen came into the week sitting just outside the playoff bubble.

Basalt also played on Tuesday, winning 3-1 at Grand Junction Central. Now 5-8-1, the Longhorns final regular-season game is on Thursday at home against Coal Ridge (8-4-2); game time is 4 p.m.

Roaring Fork’s non-losing streak ended on Tuesday with a 4-3 loss at Montrose. It’s the first loss for the Rams since falling 3-1 at Timnath on Sept. 21, a stretch where they went 5-0-2. Roaring Fork is now 8-3-2 overall with only home games vs. Vail Mountain on Thursday and CRMS on Friday remaining.

Basalt High School football’s Karson Schneider prepares to pass against Moffat County on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, on the BHS field. The Longhorns won, 48-7.

Football

Aspen football’s faint playoff hopes come down to the final two weeks. Next up, the Skiers host Coal Ridge at 7 p.m. on Friday on the AHS turf in what is both senior night and homecoming.

The Titans are 5-2 overall and 2-1 in 2A West play, while the Skiers are 4-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Basalt remains undefeated and atop the league at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in conference. The Longhorns play on Friday at Middle Park (1-6, 0-3), with a 7 p.m. kickoff in Granby.

The final week of the regular season has Aspen traveling to Basalt on Nov. 1 with league titles and playoff spots possibly on the line.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Basalt was ranked No. 1 in all of Class 2A in CHSAANow.com’s seeding index, which determines postseason play. Coal Ridge was No. 17 and Aspen No. 24. Only 16 teams make the 2A playoffs.

Roaring Fork football, fresh off a 33-12 win at Olathe, travels to Cedaredge (4-3) on Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. The Rams are 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league play with two games remaining. They were ranked No. 25 in Class 2A seeding as of Wednesday afternoon.

Cross country

Regionals for cross country have arrived. Both Aspen and Basalt will send athletes to Fraser on Friday for their Class 3A regional meet, hosted by Middle Park. The top four teams and top 15 individual qualifiers not on a qualifying team will advance to the state meet, set for Saturday, Nov. 2, in Colorado Springs.

The fall seasons have concluded for golf, softball, and tennis.
