Surat: A couple hired for cleaning work at a bungalow in the Althan area of the city allegedly stole valuables worth Rs 14 lakh on the third day of the job and fled.
According to the complaint filed by Baba Patel with Althan police, he lives in Umiya Bunglows 1 in Umra with his wife, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
On Oct 12, he hired a couple named Rahul and Arti to clean their bungalow.They had asked the society watchman for work and the watchman had introduced them to the family.
After working on Oct 12 and Oct 13, they came to the bungalow at 11am on Oct 14. Patel's wife was home alone at the time as Patel and his son were at their factory and the daughter-in-law had gone to her child's school.
Rahul and Arti came in, went to the second floor and broke the lock on the bedroom cupboard. They stole gold, silver, and cash worth Rs 14 lakh and left in about 45 minutes.
Althan police inspector N H Brahmbhatt told TOI: "We are checking the mobile numbers used by the accused. We are also trying to identify them on CCTV footage."
