Varanasi: To make the campus cleaner along with effective management of solid waste, Banaras Hindu University is set to launch a comprehensive drive from Nov 4. The initiative will cover all households on the campus.
As part of the drive, initiated by the Sanitary and Support Services unit of the university, sanitary staff will undertake door-to-door waste collection from all the residences on the campus. One of the essential requirements for the success of the initiative is segregation of waste at the source.
The SSS is also making efforts to sensitise the residents so that waste segregation is carried out successfully. People are being educated to use separate bins to dump various kinds of garbage, like Green Colour for waste that can be utilised for composting, Blue Colour for waste that can't be used for composting (plastic, metal, glass, etc.), and Red Colour for the purpose of dumping chemicals, sprays, batteries, e-waste, or medical waste, etc. The university administration has called upon residents and members of the university to cooperate in the endeavour.
Professor In-Charge of Sanitary and Support Services, Prof Sarfaraz Alam, said that compost pits have been constructed at various places, which will be used to dump the organic waste collected from households, hostels, and canteens for sustainable waste management.
