Chennai: It is more than three years since the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) began biomining the 225-acre Perungudi dumpyard, which contains 35 lakh cubic metres of waste, for Rs350 crore. However, GCC sends 2302.53 MT/day to the dumpyard, adding to the landfill.
While they set a deadline of August 31 to complete the biomining and reclaim the marshland, officials claim only 80% of the waste is biomined.
"Perungudi dumpyard biomining occurred in six packages, and three of them are completed. One of the contractors is terminated, and the other two are yet to complete their parts. We will expedite biomining works after the northeast monsoon," said GCC Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran.
The Kodungaiyur dumpyard biomining works have just begun for Rs640 crore to clear 66 lakh cubic metres of garbage spread across 252 acres. "The works are divided into six packages, and four of them have begun now," said the Commissioner. However, 2387.22 MT/day of waste enters the dumpyard, noted the study.
