New Delhi: Delhi govt is planning to reorganise and revamp the bus system and bus terminals in the city by designating the three inter-state bus terminals in the city as hubs for buses travelling to specific states. Additionally, govt plans to revamp the ISBTs and ensure airport-like facilities at these important transport centres.
Anand Vihar ISBT has been designated to serve buses bound for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other states in that direction. While Kashmere Gate ISBT will cater to buses heading towards Haryana, Punjab, Kashmir and other regions along that route, the terminal at Sarai Kale Khan will be dedicated to buses going to Rajasthan and other destinations.
A govt official said that in the present system, "one can get buses, for instance, for UP and Uttarakhand from both Kashmere Gate and Anand Vihar". The transport department intends to streamline the system and making the ISBTs exclusive for states would get rid of confusion for travellers. It would also reduce congestion because the buses wouldn't have to traverse the city but only take the exit towards the state they intend to drive to.
Delhi govt is also set to revamp the three ISBTs. The blueprint for upgrading Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan to multi-modal transport hubs is ready. Facilities for travellers after the revamp will feature facilities like travelators, food courts, cloakrooms and better areas.
In the initial plans, the new structures at the two ISBTs will each span six floors, with the topmost level designed as a viewing deck. The basements will accommodate parking and the arrival section of the terminal and the ground floor will feature a passenger lounge. The first three floors will be departure zones, with charging bays and transport offices situated above them.
A key aspect of this modernisation is the multimodal integration linking the Regional Rapid Transport System, Delhi Metro and Indian Railways. Both Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan are set to have RRTS stations.
