Margao: The Green Goa Foundation has written to the chief officer of Margao Municipal Council (MMC), Melwyn Vaz, demanding immediate action for the recovery of Rs 17 lakh allegedly syphoned into the personal account of a municipal employee.
The MMC filed a complaint with the police against its employee who is accused of syphoning the funds. Further investigation is under way.
The chairman of the NGO, Raison Almeida, pointed out to Vaz in his letter that several months after the issue came into the public domain, there was no attempt to recover the misappropriated funds. The funds in question were the occupation fees collected by the MMC from the Holy Spirit Church fair stalls.
In his letter, Almeida urged the chief officer to ensure that there is no “tampering of evidence” and to do everything within his power to recover the amount.
