CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu govt has reconstituted the district-level coastal zone management authority to align roles and responsibilities with ‘present circumstances.’

A recent govt order stated that the personal assistant (general) to the district collector has been designated as the member secretary of the 16-member district-level coastal zone management authority.
“The reconstitution is to ensure that the process is fastened to enable speedy clearances at the district level,” said an official.
The state coastal zone management authority had earlier represented to the govt, emphasizing the necessity for district administrative authorities such as village administrative officers and tahsildars, along with other departmental officials, to verify petitions and confirm any violations.
The govt order stated that district authorities need to recommend project proposals to the state coastal zone management authority within two months from the date of receipt of applications for approval.
The order further stated, "It shall inquire or review cases of violations or contraventions of the coastal regulation zone notification suo motu or on the basis of a complaint made by any individual or body or organization and shall submit a detailed comprehensive report on the violation of state authority."
The district authority is also tasked with acting on confirmed violations as per the directions of the state authority. Additionally, it will assist in sponsored investigations and research activities aimed at protecting and conserving the coastal environment.
