Bengaluru: Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road in northern Bengaluru, stretching from MS Palya Junction till the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, near Attur Layout, caved in at four places following heavy overnight rain.
The road appeared strafed as it was punctuated by potholes and bad stretches. A stretch caved in at Doddabettahalli while a tanker truck was moving around noon Tuesday. The truck driver informed the tanker owner about the incident and waited for assistance to move the vehicle. Within a kilometre of this spot, at MS Palya Junction, the road caved in at three places. Traffic police erected barricades to avoid any untoward incident.
BMTC buses, autorickshaws, and cars were seen struggling to pass MS Palya Junction towards Jalahalli Air Force Station following the cave-ins.
Suraj Kumar, a resident of Doddabettahalli, told TOI the road was in bad condition after BWSSB took up pipeline work as part of the Cauvery Stage V project a few months ago. After it completed the pipeline work, neither BWSSB nor BBMP restored the stretch. Gravel was spread over the dug-up stretch but it was washed away during the rain over the past week.
Javeed, an auto driver and resident of MS Palya, said two-wheel riders have been falling after skidding on the bad stretches.
