Five TN cops honoured on commemoration day
Chennai: The police commemoration day took off on a poignant note as a young boy in khaki stepped forward to honour his fallen hero – his grandfather.
Tharun, a Class IV student from Perambur, laid a wreath at the Martyrs' Memorial inside the state police headquarters in memory of his grandfather, Gurumoorthy, who died in the line of duty.
On Monday, the state govt honoured the ultimate sacrifice of five of its own special sub-inspector K Pushparaj (Virudhunagar), head constable Kumaran (Avadi), grade I constable M Karthikeyan (Virudhunagar ), grade I constable P Vignesh (Namakkal), and grade I constable S Jesus Alwin (Thoothukudi) - who laid down their lives in the line of duty this year.

"Soldiers protect borders of the nation, while police protect our homes. Many sacrifice their lives without hesitation for a noble cause. On Police Commemoration Day, I pay tribute to those brave warriors and their sacrifices," said M K Stalin on X.
DGP Shankar Jiwal laid a wreath at the memorial. District collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade, police commissioner A Arun, former national security advisor M K Narayanan also paid their respects. Earlier, a police team, along with the mounted branch, conducted a ceremonial parade followed by a gun salute as a mark of respect for deceased policemen.
A total of 213 police personnel and paramilitary forces were killed in the line of duty across India from Sept 1, 2023, to Aug 31, 2024.
