Kurla E school teachers on election duty only during Diwali vacay, poll days: ECI
Mumbai: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday told the Bombay High Court that the teachers of a private aided Urdu school in Kurla (E) would be required to attend election duty only during the Diwali vacation and on November 19 and 20, polling day.
Justices A S Chandurkar and Rajesh Patil heard a petition by parents of Green Mumbai Primary School, challenging the ECI's October 4 order of Returning Officer, Kurla constituency, requiring that teachers attend election duty for State Assembly elections three days a week.
The petition stated it would disrupt the school's functioning and ongoing exams of various classes.
ECI's advocate Akshay Shinde submitted an October 17 communication issued by the Election Registration Authority, addressed to the teachers, stating that the October 4 order stands modified. They would be required to undertake election duty during Diwali vacations from October 28 to November 12. Thereafter, on November 19 and November 20, such duties would be requisitioned, it added.
"We find that the modified order takes care of the apprehension expressed by the petitioners who are parents of students studying in the said school," the judges noted in the order. They accepted the communication and disposed of the petition.
