NEW DELHI: A Delhi court recently granted interim bail of eight days to an accused in a larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Delhi riots, registered under the UAPA. Shadab Ahmad, an accused in the case, sought interim bail for a period of 20 days on the grounds of his younger sister's marriage in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, on November 2.
The court of Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai noted that Ahmad was arrested in the present case on May 20, 2020, and has been in judicial custody since then.

Ahmad had previously moved an application for regular bail and another application for interim bail, but both were dismissed.
"Considering the fact that the applicant has to attend the marriage of his real sister, the court deems it justified to grant the desired relief. Accordingly, the application is allowed," said the court.
The court granted bail to Ahmad from October 29 to November 5, 2024, upon furnishing his personal bond in the sum of Rs 20,000 with one surety of the same amount. The court directed Ahmad to surrender before the concerned jail superintendent after the expiry of the interim bail period by the evening of November 11.
In his application submitted before the court, Ahmad stated that he is the eldest son in his family and plays a crucial role in the wedding ceremonies. He further noted that his father, who is over 60 years old, is the sole earning member of the family, and his younger brother has just finished his studies and is busy appearing for several competitive exams for jobs.
Ahmad emphasized that there is no chance of him fleeing from justice, as he has deep roots in society and his family has lived in their ancestral village in Bijnor for generations. The court responded to the bail application filed by the prosecution after verifying the fact of the marriage of the applicant's sister from Bijnor.
