Ahmedabad: A 28-year-old woman, married to a man from Ghuma, committed suicide on the night of Oct 13 following alleged harassment by her husband and mother-in-law. Bopal police filed a complaint against the accused on Saturday. The woman's father, 54, who works with a private firm, stated in his FIR that she married a man from Ghuma in 2019.
Around six months after their wedding, she began complaining that her husband drank and forced her to cook non-vegetarian food.
When she objected to the harassment, he beat her up, according to the FIR. The complainant said that his son-in-law used to demand money for his spending, and he often fulfilled the demand for the sake of his daughter's peace. Despite this, he would beat her up over petty quarrels, the FIR states.
The man alleged that his daughter's mother-in-law also subjected her to violence. The FIR states that every time the woman returned to her maternal home in Surat due to these marital issues, the husband would give in writing on a notarised document that he would not beat her.
The complainant said that his daughter divorced her husband on Nov 6, 2022. However, her father-in-law and other community elders intervened and made them reconcile, and they began living together a couple of months after their divorce.
She then joined a private firm as a sales manager and her husband began harassing her again.
On the evening of Oct 13, she made a WhatsApp call to her mother, saying that her husband was beating her again. However, the subsequent calls made to her by her mother went unanswered.
On the night of Oct 13, one of their relatives called the complainant and informed him that his daughter had hanged herself.
Bopal police registered a complaint of dowry death and subjecting a woman to cruelty under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and began an investigation.
