Vadodara: In a major embarrassment to the city police, a daring robbery took place on Ajwa Road in the early hours of Sunday morning. Four unidentified men broke into a house and and looted jewellery, cash worth Rs 2.50 lakh, leaving the family terrified and shocked.
The incident occurred just a day after a mob lynched a notorious history-sheeter in the Warasia area.
Ashok Kumar Singhal, a businessman, discovered that his home had been broken into. He filed a complaint of burglary at Bapod Police Station.
Singhal told the cops that when he and his family, including his wife and son, were sleeping in the same room at their home, some men tried to break into their room. He heard some noises and woke up only to find the robbers attempting to open the door. Singhal and his family members tried to stop the accused from entering the room, but they broke open the door.
The robbers, who were carrying a sword and knives, threatening the couple with dire consequences if they dared to raise an alarm. They snatched the gold ornaments worth lakhs worn by Singhal and his wife. The robbers later broke open a locker in the cupboard kept in the room and stole jewellery as well as Rs 2.50 lakh cash kept inside. They collected the valuables, totaling up to Rs 11.75 lakh, and made their escape. The robbers broke into the house by opening the main door.
Singhal, 63, called his neighbours after a while, following which they rushed to his house.
Ever since rumours started spreading about armed burglars lurking in the shadows, the residents had become increasingly anxious. The police had tried to ease their fears by promising to increase patrolling at night, reassuring everyone that there was no concrete evidence to support the rumours.
