Ludhiana: Sadar Jagraon police on Saturday registered a case against at least five identified and three unidentified accused for assaulting the polling booth agent of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the counting of votes for panchayat elections.
Tarsem Singh of Swaddi Khurd village had suspected the accused of miscounting the votes during the panchayat elections.
When the victim raised an objection, the accused attacked him.
The accused have been identified as Resham Singh, Jasveer Singh, Boota Singh, Hardeep Singh — all residents of the same village, and their three unidentified accomplices.
The victim said he was present during the counting of the votes when he suspected Resham Singh, a supporter of another party, of getting votes counted wrongly. When he objected to it, Resham Singh allegedly manhandled him, thrashed him and pushed him out.
Tarsem added that when he went out of the premises of the polling booth, the aides of Resham Singh were already present there with sharp-edged and blunt weapons in their hands. On seeing him, the accused allegedly attacked him and assaulted him.
Tarsem said when his nephew Kranveer Singh came for his rescue, the accused assaulted him also. He managed to escape and his son Gurmeet Singh rushed him to the hospital.
ASI Surjit Singh, the investigating officer from Sadar Jagraon police station, said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused.
