Giani Harpreetshifts Sikhfocus to claimsby Canada cops
Amritsar: Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar, Giani Harpreet Singh, has called upon Sikh religious and political leaders to set aside internal disputes temporarily to focus on an international situation that has developed for the community after the accusations of foreign govts and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Day after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) rejected his resignation that he had tendered after being accused of keeping relations with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), this statement appears to be a subtle critique of the BJP govt in an effort to reaffirm his panthic identity within the Sikh circles.

Without naming the Indian govt directly, the Jathedar remarked: “The RCMP expressed concerns recently about violent criminal activities linked to foreign agents operating in Canada. These issues have garnered attention of the Five Eyes countries, underscoring the need to protect the security and rights of Sikhs globally.”
These comments appear to be an attempt to divert public’s attention from the Sikh tussle between the clergy and the Shioromani Akali Dal leadership to the diplomatic fallout between India and Canada, which makes it difficult for the Sikhs to travel between the two countries. With both nations reducing their diplomatic missions, Sikhs in Punjab may face obstacles when seeking to visit Canada.
