Bhagalpur/Patna: Union minister and
BJP functionary
Giriraj Singh kicked off his five-day ‘Hindu Swabhiman Yatra’ from Bhagalpur amid tight security on Friday.
The yatra, which will travel through Katihar, Purnia, Araria and Kishanganj, was launched at the Budhanath temple, a prominent shrine of Lord Shiva. A large crowd, including over 5,000 women, accompanied Singh during the yatra, which passed through main city areas before culminating in a public meeting at Zila School ground.
The BJP has distanced itself from the yatra, although several local party members and leaders participated.
Singh said the yatra was a personal initiative and not associated with the BJP. “My goal is to unite Hindus,” he said.
Meanwhile, RJD’s Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and JD(U)’s Anand Mohan criticised the yatra, accusing Singh of attempting to polarise voters ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Yadav described the move as unconstitutional and said it could disturb social harmony. Mohan apprehended that the yatra might create unrest, especially as it passes through Muslim-majority areas.
