NEW DELHI: A fabricator involved in the recent collapse of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at a fort in
Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district has been arrested from Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
Fabricator Parmeshwar Ramnaresh Yadav, who was taken into custody on Thursday, had used substandard material while shaping the 35-foot-tall statue of the Maratha warrior king.
A technical analysis revealed that the statue had rusted in several places, indicating the use of low-quality materials.
Police said, “The fabricator used inferior material to form the structure and did not join the parts properly through welding.”
The statue, dedicated to the 17th-century Maratha empire founder, and unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rajkot fort in Sindhudurg on December 4 last year, fell on August 26 during strong winds.
Yadav, who played a significant role in the statue's construction, had his involvement confirmed during the investigation and was subsequently listed as an accused. He appeared in court and was remanded in police custody for three days.
Previously, the statue's sculptor-contractor, Jaydeep Apte, and consultant, Chetan Patil, were also arrested in connection with the incident.
