Lawyers condemn DGP’s note
Chennai: Madras high court has condemend the state DGP, Shankar Jiwal's reported statement that 396 lawyers had multiple meetings with top rowdies lodged in various prisons and misused their position as lawyers in order to conduct kangaroo courts.
In a signed resolution on Friday, Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) president G Mohanakrishnan said such a blanket accusation against the legal fraternity undermined the fundamental rights enshrined in legal system.
He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the circular.
"Lawyers have a professional duty to represent their clients, regardless of the charges they face, and visiting them in prison is a legitimate and necessary part of the legal process," the MHAA statement said.
Any suggestion that such meetings are inherently suspicious or indicative of illegal activity is defamatory and misrepresents the core principles of justice and fairness, it added.
