Panaji: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) extended its yellow alert for Goa until Oct 18, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40km/h in isolated areas across the state. This follows recent heavy rainfall as the state braces for more adverse weather.
“Squally weather with wind speeds of 35 km/h to 45 km/h, gusting to 55km/h, is likely to prevail along and off the south Maharashtra-Goa coast till Oct 19.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas during the period,” the warning by IMD stated.
Earlier yellow alerts for Oct 16 and 17 led to heavy rainfall, with the state recording 50.3mm in a single day. Among the 13 rain gauge stations, Margao saw the highest at 108.4mm, followed by Ponda (98.8mm) and Sanquelim (95.2mm). Quepem recorded the lowest at 10mm.
These weather conditions impacted temperature levels across the state. In Panaji, the maximum temperature on Thursday was 28.4°C, 4°C below normal, while the minimum was 24.3°C.
IMD warned of a new upper air cyclonic circulation forming over the north Andaman Sea around Oct 20. This could lead to a low-pressure area developing over the Central Bay of Bengal around Oct 22, which may then move northwestwards and intensify.
