In a significant step towards sustainability and environment protection, a Modified Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) System has been commissioned at Barsua Iron Mines (BIM) under Odisha Group of Mines (OGoM) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant. The new facility was inaugurated by Mr. Himanshu Mishra, CGM (BIM, KIM & TIM) on 3rd October, 2024 in the presence of Mr. P C Barua (GM-Mining), Mr. Rajesh Kumar (GM-Mining), Mr. N C Panda (GM-HR) , other executives, employees and Union representatives of BIM-TIM.
It is noteworthy that the new ZLD system, implemented at a cost of Rs. 1.13 Crore, will provide a sustainable solution for environment protection by complying with necessary statutory requirements of State Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment & Forest, Climate Change, Government of India. It will also help in water conservation through reuse and re-circulation of overflow water for the beneficiation plant.
The main aim of the project is to eliminate the discharge of waste water generated from the wet beneficiation plant being discharged to existing Tailing pond and completely reuse the overflow water, thereby avoiding contamination with natural water streams and also protecting the surrounding natural water ecosystem.
Notably, the new system will eliminate the discharge of the overflow water of the Tailing Dam to the natural water stream at Kuradih Nallah and ensure the effective reutilization of the overflow water. It’ll minimize the makeup water requirements for wet circuit operations, reducing the water discharge, conserving water resources, minimizing environmental impact, promoting ecological balance and also saving substantial quantity of water Intake.
The project has been successfully implemented under the leadership of Mr. Alok Verma (ED-Mines) with additional charge of ED(Works), RSP, Mr. Himanshu Mishra, Mr. Anand Kumar (CGM-Mines Projects), Mr. Malla Srinivasu (CGM- E&L),Mr. Tilak Patnaik (GM In-charge–Mines). The BIM Project team comprising Mr. Subhendu Kumar Sahoo, Project Manager (AGM –Projects), Mr. MNS Srinivas (Mmanager-Projects), Mr. T P Ekka (DGM-Mechanical), Mr. Rajesh Kumar Adha (AGM-Mechanical), Mr. Utkarsh Gaurav (DGM-Electrical), Mr. Narayan Panda (AGM-Electrical) and Mr. Anupam Naik (AGM- E&L) have played an instrumental role in the execution of the project.
