  • Amazon has two new exciting Kindles for readers: Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft.
  • Kindle Paperwhite has the largest display ever yet is the thinnest of all Kindles. It’s also faster and comes with an exceptionally long battery life.
  • Kindle Colorsoft is the first ever colored Kindle with vibrant book covers, pictures that you can zoom into, and colored highlights.

Kindle Paperwhite & Kindle Colorsoft: Amazon's New Launches

Amazon has a few exciting new launches lined up for October. The first one is Kindle Paperwhite 2024 (aka the Paperwhite 6 or the Paperwhite 12th Generation).

It looks like the company didn’t initially plan on unveiling this Kindle right now. However, a press release saying “Kindle Paperwhite 2024 is available now” was accidentally leaked on its Spanish website. And although it was shortly removed from the site, we got all the details we needed.

Note: Since the press release was for customers, we don’t have the entire spec sheet yet but we have enough information to help you decide whether you need the new Kindle Paperwhite or not.

Here’s what’s new in this Kindle:

  • The largest display ever going over 7 inches – yet it’s thinner than all the Kindles that came before it.
  • Exceptional battery life, lasting well over 3 months on a single charge.
  • 25% faster page changes which will also make a noticeable difference when using the Kindle Store and Kindle Library
  • Water-resistant and comes with a whopping 16GB of storage.
  • Highest ever contrast ratio thanks to the thin-film oxide transistor.

There’s also a premium model for this called the Paperwhite Signature Edition that comes with 32GB storage and wireless changing.

The device was officially released on October 16 and is priced at $159.99 (for the regular Paperwhite version) and $199.99 (for the Signature Edition)

Kindle Colorsoft

The second exciting launch is Kindle Colorsoft. After years of readers asking for the company to put some colors in their Kindle, the company finally delivered and created the first-ever colored Kindle.

It’s already available for pre-order but the shipments will start from October 30. Priced at $279.99, it also has the same features as Kindle Paperwhite with the addition of vibrant colors that can bring your stories to life.

Launching a colored Kindle took so long because the technology just wasn’t ready. As Amazon executives said at the New York launch event on Tuesday, it’s not as simple as swapping the display.

The device uses E Ink’s Kaleido technology with an entirely new display and an oxide backplane that gives the tiny bits of ink more fluidity. The LED pixels on the display also have a new way of shining light through them individually such that colors look more vibrant.

  • The new display technology isn’t just about making things pretty. It also ensured that the company could add colors without hampering contrast, and device resolution on increasing page-turn latency.
  • Other than that you can also zoom into the images and add highlights on the book in multiple colors and later look them up in a quick, color-wise search.

The only downside is that sometimes when there’s an image on the screen and you are trying to zoom into it, the image pixelates for a second, then the page refreshes and then you get the zoom-in. Similarly, when you are turning a page with an image, it does a full flashing refresh.

However, these are just small bumps that you’ll probably not notice. Also, since Amazon has finally cracked the code on how to add colors to the Kindle, we can expect more polished devices soon.
