Jaipur: In a crackdown on Wednesday, Jaipur city police raided a factory producing spurious ghee and detained two individuals involved in the operation.
ACP (Mansarovar) Sanjay Kakde reported that around 1,000 litre of fake ghee were seized during the raid.
According to police, the factory had been packaging adulterated ghee in containers branded with two top brands and distributing it across various areas of Jaipur.
The counterfeit product was sold at approximately Rs 100 cheaper per litre than the original brands, boosting sales in the market. This raid is part of a larger effort to combat adulterated food products, which has intensified with the onset of the festive season. In the past five months, thousands of litres of fake ghee have been seized in various operations across Jaipur.
The Muhana Police Station received a tip-off about the factory and conducted the raid at Keshyawala at 8am on Wednesday. During the raid, the police discovered a large number of stickers, wrappers, and tins from two well-known brands. The suspects were caught filling ghee into containers, and though they attempted to flee, they were quickly detained.
According to sources, the factory had been operational for over a year, and locals had previously alerted the food police to its activities. The suspects admitted that the ghee was being packaged in the factory and sold to various shops in Jaipur for Rs 400-450 per litre, significantly lower than the price of genuine ghee.
The police are now investigating the shops where the counterfeit ghee was being supplied. Once identified, those shops will also face legal action. Attempts to contact the factory owner have been unsuccessful so far.
