Mangaluru: In a step towards advancing medical research and healthcare technology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and Mangalore University have signed an MoU. This collaboration is focused on establishing a systematic framework for gamma irradiation of bone allograft materials, which will play a pivotal role in supporting the operations of the newly founded bone bank at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal.
As per the MoU, MAHE will carry out routine gamma irradiation of these bone allografts at the Centre for Application of Radiation and Radioisotope Technology (CARRT), in partnership with Mangalore University.
During the signing ceremony at Mangalore University, vice-chancellor PL Dharma emphasised the importance of this collaboration and encouraged further partnerships between MU and MAHE in the future.
Dr P Giridhar Kini, registrar, MAHE, explained that gamma irradiation is a crucial process that ensures the removal of potential pathogens, guaranteeing the safety and quality of the allografts. K Raju Mogaveera, registrar, Mangalore University, noted that the bone bank will serve as a critical resource for various surgical procedures, ensuring that healthcare providers have access to safe and high-quality bone grafts.
