Vadodara: With the city recovering from the flood aftermath, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is on an overdrive to cheer up the citizens with colours. With the festive season fast approaching and the anticipated visits of dignitaries, VMC knew that they had to act fast in order to restore the city to its former glory.
The VMC sprang into action after the city faced heavy floods and incessant rains.
The aftermath left many roads, footpaths, traffic islands, and circles in a state of disrepair. The idea was to make the city more cheerful after the gloomy period it faced.
"We were to do a lot of work in the wake of the floods. We thought we should not limit it to cleanliness and repairs of the damage caused by the floods," said VMC commissioner Dilip Kumar Rana.
Rana added that the perception was that the work was being done in anticipation of a possible visit by dignitaries to the city, but that was not the case. "More work is being done in areas outside the possible routes the dignitaries may visit," he said. Notably, VMC is gearing up for a possible visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez.
Standing Committee Chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry said that the civic body was participating in the Swachhta Hi Seva Mission 2024 and Nirma Gujarat 2.0 initiatives. "A lot of activities, including those focused on cleanliness, are also a part of these drives. The festive season is also around the corner and the possible visit by the PM, have also coincided around the same time," he added. Mistry pointed out that while some lighting may be temporary until the festive season, other elements like wall paintings will stay.
