Deaf and mute girl, 13, raped by neighbour in Kanpur

Kanpur: A 13-year-old deaf and mute girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Juhi police station area of Kanpur city on Monday evening.
The perpetrator gagged the girl, who was alone, with a cloth before committing the heinous crime. Later, the girl managed to communicate her traumatic experience to her family and the police using gestures. This prompted the police to register a case and initiate a search for the accused.
The man from Parampurwa, who operates a cart for a living, resides with his family including his minor deaf and mute niece.
His elder brother is employed in Kerala, and his sister-in-law passed away a few years ago.
The 13-year-old niece lives with the family.
On Monday morning, the man and his wife left the house as usual to set up their cart for the day.
Seizing the opportunity of finding the girl alone at home, the neighbour, identified as Taj Babu, barged into the house and committed the crime after gagging the girl. He later fled the scene.
Upon being informed by the neighbours, the uncle and his wife rushed back home and were shocked to find their niece in such a condition.
The survivor was rushed to hospital for medical attention. Despite her limitations, she managed to convey the entire incident to the police through gestures.
Based on the complaint filed by the uncle, the police have registered a case against the accused.
Inspector-in-charge Manoj Kumar Mishra said that a sign language expert will be brought in to record the survivor's statement as part of the investigation. "Searches are underway to nail down the accused," he added.
