Pune: The
India Meteorological Department on Monday said parts of the state, including Pune, might experience increased thundershowers in the coming days, while announcing southwest monsoon's exit from country over the next four days.
"Conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from remaining parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and some more parts of Maharashtra over the next two days.
It was likely to retreat from the rest of the country in the subsequent two days," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated.
Amid the southwest monsoon's likely exit, its northeast branch is set to make its entrance. "Simultaneously with the setting in of easterly and northeasterly winds over southern peninsular India, south and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, the northeast monsoon rainfall activity is likely to commence over southeast peninsular region during the same period," the IMD said.
Monsoon withdrawal has been at a standstill over parts of north Maharashtra since Oct 5, despite typically exiting the entire state by Oct 15. IMD scientist SD Sanap told TOI, "There is possibility of thundershowers and light rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, including Pune city and district, over the next few days."
He attributed the possibility of light rain and thundershowers to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which was channeling moisture into the state. The low-pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal was expected to intensify and move west-northwestwards, potentially affecting weather patterns in south India. "It is likely to become a well-marked low-pressure area over central parts of south Bay of Bengal by Oct 15. Thereafter, it is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during the subsequent two days," Sanap said.
"Many monsoon features seem to be missing currently, and there has been prevalence of easterly wind flow," Sanap said, adding, "Monsoon wind flow is now absent. But rain was continuing, which is why monsoon exit got delayed slightly in parts of the state."
