CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress President K Selvaperunthagai instructed district Congress committee secretaries to establish control rooms with district and ward functionaries to assist people during the heavy rains.
He urged party workers to ensure that govt helpline services reach residents in their districts and called on them to provide support in their localities during the ongoing downpour.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for October 16 and an orange alert for October 15 and 17 across various parts of the state, prompting chief minister M.K. Stalin to declare a holiday for schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet on Tuesday. Private IT firms have been advised to allow employees to work from home from October 15 to 18.
On Monday, the IMD issued a red alert for nine districts on October 16, predicting extremely heavy rainfall (over 21 cm) in isolated areas.
Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for 15 districts, including Chennai and surrounding areas, for October 15, which may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall (6 cm to 20 cm) at isolated locations.
