MSU revises its progression policy under NEP
Vadodara: MS University on Monday finally cleared the confusion surrounding the academic progression of students to the next semester.
Since last month, over 2,500 students, especially from the faculties of commerce and arts, were struggling to progress to the next semester.
Citing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the university was not allowing students who had received an ATKT (allowed to keep term) grade or were absent for internal or external exams in Semester I or Semester II to take admission to Semester III.
This created an uproar. Student unions made representations to the university and faculty, saying MSU was the only state university that had adopted this policy.
Traditionally, all students who received an ATKT or remained absent were enrolled in Semester III and were given a chance to clear their pending ATKT exams or the subjects they had failed.
On Monday, MSU issued a revised circular regarding the implementation of NEP, on the credit-based transition. The circular states that students who have a backlog of 16 credits (35%) out of 44 credits of Semester I and Semester II will be eligible for forward promotion to Semester III of the second year.
This means that even students who failed in four subjects (two credits each) in the first two semesters will be eligible for academic progression to the next semester.
Professor Hitesh Raviya, OSD (public relations), said academic progression has been made flexible for students.
"All such students will be allowed to pay their fees by the respective faculties in the next couple of days," said Raviya, adding that after Diwali, such students will be able to take the exams to clear their backlog.
