Bokaro: A herd of 22 elephants is wreaking havoc in Chargi panchayat under the Petarwar police station area, making residents and farmers of six villages spend sleepless nights since October 10. The herd arrived on October 10 after traversing through the Hisim forest in Kasmar block.
Dhanulal Mahato, a local farmer, rued, “Crops belonging to many farmers, including myself, Uday Bedia and Sangeet Devi and others were destroyed by the elephants.” Forest department officials are trying to ensure the herd remain at a safe distance from human settlements.
Bokaro DFO Rajnish Kumar said the farmers would be compensated for the damage to their crops and an intiative has been made in this regard. tnn
