Panaji: A lot can happen in the blink of an eye – especially while driving. As
road safety becomes an increasingly urgent concern in Goa, a pair of anti-sleep alarm glasses developed by Class XI students from Canacona aims to enhance safety for drivers during risky night hours.
These innovative glasses, designed specifically to combat drowsy driving, became the highlight of the 13th Road Safety Week exhibition held at Don Bosco High School, Panaji, on Monday.
“We went through several road accident surveys and realised that many accidents occur due to loss of vehicle control or drivers falling asleep at the wheel,” said Aayushka Komarpant, one of the students.
The pair of glasses is equipped with a sensor that detects if a driver’s eyes are closed for longer than normal. “Normally, each blink lasts between 0.1 and 0.4 seconds. The moment the driver shuts their eyes for two seconds—far longer than a typical blink—the glasses emit a beep to alert them, breaking the spell of drowsiness,” said Amarjeet Singh, a student of XI science at Mallikarjun HSS, Canacona.
The students already conducted successful trials, demonstrating the device’s functionality and effectiveness. “We believe there can be several modifications made to enhance the device further. One potential improvement involves an additional alert if the driver doesn’t respond within two seconds, which could lead to the car automatically stopping, enhancing safety even more,” Singh said.
As these students continue to refine their prototype, they hope that their initiative creates positive change on the state roads. “We managed to reduce the production cost of the prototype to Rs 1,500 using materials that are both effective and inexpensive,” he said. “This cost is lower than the retail price of existing similar products, which can reach up to Rs 4,500,” he added.
