Ludhiana: A 60-year-old man died in a Saturday night
road accident at the Jawahar Nagar crossing near Middha Chowk here while on his way to distributing food with family. When another car had appeared in front, he swerved to avoid a collision but lost control of his vehicle, causing it to overturn and crash into an electricity pole.
Victim Satpal Chhabra’s wife and daughter-in-law sustained minor injuries in this accident.
Their airbags had deployed but it failed to prevent serious harm from the impact, as police reports suggest.
The eyewitnesses assisted the victims quickly, flipping the car over to rescue them before they were taken to Dayanand Medical College Hospital. Chhabra succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital.
Inspector Vijay Kumar and assistant sub-inspector Dharampal Chaudhary from the Division Number 5 police station arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted. ASI Chaudhary stated that Chhabra’s family had attended a ‘barsi’ ceremony for his brother-in-law and was returning home around 11.30 pm after picking up food to share with those in need.
As they approached Jawahar Nagar crossing, the other car cut in front of them at speed.
Police have impounded the other car and are investigating its ownership, which is registered under a private company in Feroze Gandhi Market. The authorities concerned are working to also identify the driver who fled the scene. Cops have now filed a case against that unidentified individual for causing death by negligence.
