Mumbai, 14th October 2024: In response to criticism regarding incomplete work and last-mile connectivity challenges, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) provided an update on Sunday detailing ongoing and upcoming initiatives aimed at improving commuting on the Aqua Line 3.
An official stated, “We are actively undertaking Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) projects in collaboration with all stakeholders and service providers at Aqua Line (Metro-3) stations to ensure seamless connectivity and enhance passenger convenience. Our contractors have restored the road network around the underground stations, except at BKC, where significant reinstatement work at the Income Tax junction is expected to be completed in six weeks.”
The MMRC has initiated discussions with the traffic police, BEST, BMC, and Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) over the past few months to develop a comprehensive MMI plan. Various initiatives already underway are either completed or in progress and will soon be accessible to Aqua Line users.
“We prioritize facilitating smooth transfers between feeder and dispersal modes to and from metro stations. The staircase linking the nearest exit from Metro Line 1 to the Marol Naka concourse of the Aqua Line has been completed. Additionally, air-conditioned underground pedestrian crossings integrated with the stations beneath major routes, including MIDC Central Road, the Western Express Highway, and Bandra-Kurla Complex Road, have also been finalized. Covered pedestrian canopies at CSMIA T1 and T2 stations have been established for airport travellers,” the official added.
Furthermore, “The Santacruz Metro Station is connected to an existing 800-meter skywalk from the Santacruz (WR) suburban station,” they noted.
Managing Director Ashwini Bhide expressed confidence in the forthcoming enhancements, stating, “With the completion of Multi-Modal Integration efforts, the Aqua Line will provide an improved travel experience in the weeks ahead. Our commitment to ensuring safe and convenient interchanges between feeder and dispersal modes and Metro stations will greatly benefit passengers.”
