'PM Modi visited for photoshoot': Kerala passes resolution against Centre's delayed aid for Wayanad

NEW DELHI: The Kerala assembly on Sunday unanimously passed a resolution against the central government over delay in the extension of financial aid to the landslide-hit Wayanad which killed more than 400.
During an adjournment motion discussion on the rehabilitation of landslide survivors in Wayanad, both the CPI(M)-led LDF and the opposition UDF united in criticizing the prime minister, PTI reported.
Questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the widespread coverage of his visit to Wayanad, MLA T Siddique, who moved the adjournment motion said, "For the rehabilitation, we need at least Rs 2000 crore. Now, the landslide survivors ask whether PM Modi had visited Wayanad for a photo shoot."
Siddique claimed that even months after the visit of PM Modi, not a single penny had been allocated by the Centre for Wayanad's rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, former health minister of the state K K Shailaja raised questions regarding why the Centre did not provide adequate aid to deal with the disaster.
"His visit received wide media coverage. But what did we get? The Centre had not given even a penny to Wayanad so far. Crores of rupees of destruction happened. How could this small state bear all these (expenses)?" she said.
She said that in a federal democratic system, it is the moral obligation of the central government to assist each state during natural disasters and provide funds for rehabilitation efforts.
