Youth club builds restroom for lifeguards at Someshwar Beach
Mangaluru: Lifeguards at Someshwar Beach in Ullal now have access to a restroom, thanks to the efforts of a local youth club, Friends Kolya.
Lifeguards, who volunteer to protect devotees and tourists visiting the beach near Someshwara Temple, had long been without basic facilities. With Someshwar Beach drawing large crowds of visitors, including devotees, the lifeguards play a crucial role in ensuring their safety.
In memory of a club member, Jithesh of Kaneerthota, who recently passed away, Friends Kolya took the initiative to build a restroom for the lifeguards.
Convenor Shaneesh Kolya said the club spent around Rs 2.5 lakh to construct the facility near the temple on the seashore.
He said, "Friends Kolya has been actively involved in various social causes over the years. For this year's Dasara, we decided to build a restroom for the lifeguards who have been safeguarding visitors, particularly families from both within and outside the state. These lifeguards have saved many lives by rescuing people caught in high tides and assisting in recovering bodies."
Despite a large team of lifeguards being stationed at Someshwar Beach in the past, only a few remain active today, often sitting on an old boat while monitoring tourists. The newly built restroom will allow them to stay closer to the shore during peak hours, enhancing their ability to ensure visitor safety. The facility was officially handed over to the lifeguards on Friday, in the presence of Someshwara Town Municipal Council vice president Ravishankar Someshwara, Friends Kolya office-bearer Ashwin Kolya, and others.
