Coimbatore: A 45- year-old man was arrested by the Namakkal district police on Friday for murdering his aged father over a land dispute.
The accused was identified as I Dhamodaran, 45, a farmer. Police said R Ilaiyappan, 71, a farmer from Velliyampalayam village near Tiruchengode in Namakkal district, owned 2.5 acres of land. He had allotted 1.25 acres of the land to the widow and two children of his older son Jaganathan, while allotting the remaining 1.25 acres to his younger son, Dhamodaran.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that Dhamodaran was addicted to alcohol and often fought with his father to legally transfer his share of the property and register it in his name.
Ilaiyappan had agreed to transfer the property after sugarcane cultivation. While the sugarcane was cultivated a month ago, Ilaiyappan was yet to register the property.
"Around 7.45pm on Thursday, Dhamodaran who was under the influence of alcohol asked his father to transfer his share of the property to his name. Ilaiyappan, assured him that they could settle the issue the next morning. However, in a fit of rage, Dhamodaran took a knife and assaulted his father. Ilaiyappan suffered a deep cut injury on his neck and died on the spot," said a police officer.
Dhamodaran fled from the house after committing the
murder. His mother Rathinam lodged a complaint with Molasi police, who registered a case and subsequently arrested him on Friday.
He was remanded in judicial custody and lodged at the Salem Central Prison.
