Mumbai: Four persons were arrested by Gorai Police recently for counterfeiting entry vouchers to an amusement park and cheating the establishment to the tune of more than Rs 70 lakh. Police said at least 8,500 fakes were printed at a press operated by one of the accused.
In August, an employee of the park noticed that the bar code on some of the vouchers bore seven digits instead of six.
The management was alerted and police were approached. An FIR of cheating was registered against unidentified persons.
The police learnt that some counterfeit vouchers were sold near Borivali jetty where visitors board a ferry to go to the park. The vouchers were kept for sale with wayside snack vendors. The vendors, police got details of the accused from them.
Under the supervision of deputy commissioner of police Anand Bhoite, a team led by inspector Vijay Jadhav made four arrests. Two of them were held from Indo-Nepal border.
Police said authorised ticketing agents got vouchers in bulk, at Rs 900 each, from the park. The authorised agents would sell these at Rs 1,100 — with Rs 200 as their profit. The accused sold the fake vouchers at the same price of Rs 1,100 but pocketed it all as cost of printing was minimal.
The accused have been identified as Rohit Tiwari, Omprakash Pal, Diwakar Maurya, and Mithilesh Gupta who ran the press. —Nitasha Natu
