NEW DELHI: A special train carrying stranded passengers of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express, which collided with a stationary goods train at Kavaraippettai Railway Station, departed from Dr MGR Chennai Central early Saturday morning.
The train resumed its journey at 4.45am after the passengers were provided with food and water during the delay, according to
Southern Railway officials.
The Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express (Train No. 12578) collided with the goods train on Friday night, injuring 19 passengers and derailing 12 coaches near Kavaraippettai on the Chennai-Gudur section. The accident disrupted train services, leading to the cancellation of two trains, including the Dr MGR Chennai Central-Vijayawada Jan Shatabdi Express (Train No. 12077) and its return service.
A help desk has been set up at Chennai Central to assist affected passengers. Additionally, helpline numbers have been issued by the railways.
'Shocked by the Accident'Tamil Nadu chief minister
MK Stalin expressed shock over the incident, stating that he was closely monitoring rescue efforts. In a post on X, Stalin confirmed that the injured passengers were taken to hospital and that rescue operations were underway.
"I have directed the Hon'ble Minister @Avadi_Nasar and officials, including the District Collector, to rush to the accident site," Stalin said, adding that efforts were being made to arrange food and travel for other passengers.
Deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also visited the injured passengers at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai.
