At 143, Pb farm fires touch season’s highest
Bathinda: With paddy harvesting picking up pace, crop residue burning too has gained momentum. For the second consecutive day in the ongoing season, it crossed the 100-mark on Friday as Punjab recorded 143 stubble burning events, taking the total count to 533 so far.
About 123 stubble burning events were recorded a day earlier. Though the Oct 11 tally remained the highest in the ongoing season for the second consecutive day in the last three years, the total count so far is much less than the previous two years.

Against 143 burning events in a single-day, the number of such cases on this day last year was 26 and 45 in 2022. The total tally till this day last year was 1089 and 808 in 2022 compared to this seasons’s 533.

Amritsar continued to witness most farm fires in Punjab as it recorded 50 out of total 143 in the day followed by 42 in Tarn Taran. Farm fires were reported from 11 districts in the state. Overall, too, Amritsar is at the top with 211 out of 533 followed by 100 in the adjoining district of Tarn Taran.
As per the consortium for research on agroecosystem monitoring and modeling from space (CREAMS), 274 incidents have been recorded in Haryana, 220 in Uttar Pradesh, 71 in Madhya Pradesh, 27 in Rajasthan and 3 in Delhi taking the count in 6 states to 1128 till October 11.
Till October 9, the environmental compensation of Rs 2.87 lakh has been imposed in 94 cases and compensation of Rs 2.60 lakh has been realised. Until now, 10 FIRs have been registered against farmers u/s 223 while 84 red entries in land records has been made, 15 red entries were made on Oct 9.
