Mangaluru: The SDMC members of Devashya Mudur DK ZP Higher Primary School in Bantwal taluk organised a weeklong ‘Marnemi Vesha' to raise funds for the development of their school. They were able to collect Rs 1 lakh, which they plan to use to repair their dilapidated school building.
The SDMC members said that the funds were raised for the repair of their dilapidated school building, which needed immediate action.
However, the members said that the collected amount was insufficient to proceed with their plans to repair the school.
Vasanth Mudimara, the SDMC president, along with 12 others, including their own children, formed a Navaratri costume troupe to visit nearby villages and collect funds. "Initially, we planned for five days donning Marnemi Vesha and going around villages. However, it was extended to seven days. The reponse has been postive," said Mudimara.
The SDMC members faced challenges in raising funds from the public for the school's repair. Many questioned why the school should rely on private donations when it is the government's responsibility to maintain it. The SDMC members explained that they had exhausted all available avenues, including submitting memoranda to local officials and the deputy commissioner, but had yet to receive any assistance. As a result, they are now seeking funds from donors and through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The 69-year-old school has 84 children enrolled and six teachers employed, including three guest teachers.
