X revamps creator payments program, transitioning from ads to engagement metrics

In a shift in its monetization strategy, X has announced a major overhaul of its creator payments system. The platform will now calculate creator earnings based on a share of Premium user subscription payments instead of relying on ad revenue from post replies.

Previously, creator payouts were determined by the volume of ads shown in response to posts, with only those ads viewed by Premium subscribers counting toward payments. Under the new system, creators will earn a percentage directly from the revenue generated by Premium subscriptions.

Explaining the update, X shared “Creators! We’re excited to unveil our biggest update to Creator Revenue Sharing yet. Payouts are increasing and you’ll now be paid based on engagement with your content from Premium users – not ads in replies.

“Ads in replies will no longer impact your payout. Instead, you’ll be paid based on engagement with your content from Premium users. So, when your followers subscribe to X Premium and engage with your content, they support you directly. And, because X Premium is growing, your payout is too. The more Premium subscriptions overall, the more revenue you earn,” it added.

In an explainer, the platform noted that up to 25% of Premium subscription payments will be allocated to creators, allowing users to financially support their favorite content creators through meaningful interactions.

Payments will be based on “genuine interactions” from Premium subscribers, promoting authentic engagement while discouraging tactics aimed at artificially inflating payouts through less genuine means.

With this new approach, X aims to incentivize creators to foster genuine connections with their audience while enhancing their revenue potential.
