    Tamil Nadu second session summary

It was a fantastic post-lunch session for Tamil Nadu. The hosts have Saurashtra on the mat at 166 for seven. It has been a good effort from the TN bowlers on a benign pitch that is not offering much assistance for the bowlers.

Skipper Sai Kishore got the big fish of Cheteshwar Pujar, who got his off-stump rattled trying to shoulder arms in the first over after lunch. Mohammed struck for the third time in the next over to remove Sheldon Jackson. Arpit Vasavada has looked positive and managed a few boundaries, batting well on 43. Sai Kishore then accounted for Prerark Mankad, a sharp catch by Jagadeesan. Dharmendrasinh Jadeja fell for a poor shot trying to give Pradosh Ranjan Paul the charge and holed out to Boopathi, who took a good running catch from mid-off.

Historically, TN has not been good at cleaning up the lower order and has left teams off the hook. The hosts would want to quickly wrap up things and not let Arpit and Unadkat get the visitors to safety.

TN vs SAU - Day 1 - Session Update

It was an even session at the Sri Ramakrishna College ground here in Coimbatore as Saurashtra went to lunch at 88 for three against Tamil Nadu. Having won the toss and deciding to bat first on a pitch with a green tinge, the visitors would be relatively happy.

TN made some bold calls to its playing XI, handing debuts to pacers Gurjapneet Singh and Sonu Yadav and middle-order bat C. Andre Siddharth.

It was surprising that experienced all-rounder Vijay Shankar and left-arm spinner S. Ajith Ram, the joint second-highest wicket-taker last year with 41 scalps, were omitted. M. Shahrukh Khan has returned to the Ranji Trophy side after one year.

In the morning, Sonu Yadav looked impressive, removing opener Harvik Desai, who was caught behind, and could have had Prashwaraj Rana too, had he not overstepped.

Left-arm pacer Gurjapneet started slowly but bowled with purpose in his second spell, getting good bounce off the deck. The pick of the bowlers, though, was old warhorse M. Mohammed. The medium-pacer struck twice in his first spell, removing Chirag Jani and Prashwaraj, who were caught in the slip cordon.

Cheteshwar Pujar and Sheldon Jackson have steadied things so far. The former looked assured, while Sheldon has been a bit more flashy, edging and getting beaten a few times before he tonked Sai Kishore for a six down the ground.

Sai Kishore has not received much assistance so far, and Saurashtra will look to consolidate in the second session. The home team faces a tough grind.
