Now, AI to help cops detect fake number plates & stolen vehicles
Gurgaon: The police have launched an AI-powered system that will utilise the existing network of CCTV cameras to scan and verify vehicle number plates.
The system will detect fake number plates and help nab criminals who use such plates on their vehicles to avoid being tracked down, said a senior police officer.
The AI system will also scan vehicles' pollution certificates and fitness certificates and in case they are expired send alerts to the traffic police.

It will instantly cross-check number plates with govt records to identify discrepancies and is equipped to trace vehicles using their physical characteristics like colour and model.
Over two days, the technology has helped police identify 1,500 vehicles flouting rules from just two police nakas.
Police chief Vikas Arora said police have partnered with Staqu Technologies to streamline and strengthen law enforcement, security, and traffic management. Staqu's JARVIS platform sends real-time alerts to the officers on ground.
"This technology uses existing CCTV cameras to scan and verify number plates against vehicle registration numbers issued by the RTO. It immediately identifies discrepancies and alerts relevant authorities in real-time, marking a significant advancement in law and security enforcement," he said.

All CCTV cameras installed at key locations in the city have already been integrated with the technology, said officials.
Co-founder and chief executive officer of Staqu Technologies, Atul Rai, said, "By deploying our JARVIS platform, we aim to contribute to reducing crime and ensuring a safer environment for the residents of the city. Given that our headquarters is also based in Gurgaon, this initiative holds special significance for us."
He further added that the technology is currently in use across 11 states, helping police departments leverage AI to improve their operational effectiveness.
