Mahakali: Hanuman director Prasanth Varma announces first female superhero film in PVCU

Varma introduced the character as “the most ferocious superhero” in PVCU through an exclusive concept video.

Mahakali, the first female superhero to enter the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU), was revealed by director Prasanth Varma on Thursday. He wrote the screenplay and Puja Aparnaa Kolluru, as the director, produced it under RKD Studios, with Riwaz Ramesh Duggal serving as the producer.

‘The fiercest destroyer of evil’

Prasanth wrote on X, “Excited to join hands with @RKDStudios to bring a powerful new force to the universe. Presenting the rise of #MAHAKĀLI – an embodiment of Goddess Kali, the fiercest destroyer of evil. This Navratri, we’re breaking the mold and redefining what a superhero can be. #HappyDussehra. Directed by @PujaKolluru. Presented by #RKDuggal. Produced by #RiwazRameshDuggal.”

The first female superhero movie in the PVCU canon is Mahakali. The main cast of the movie has not yet been revealed, and it will take place in West Bengal.

Exploration of vivid themes 

“It will feature a bold and refreshing portrayal of the revered Goddess Kali, breaking stereotypes and redefining beauty standards in Indian cinema,” the note added.

Additionally, it is described in the note as a “wonderful voyage of empowerment, faith, and fortitude, inspired by the fierce and compassionate nature of the Goddess Kali.” stating, “The film will explore not only her divine power but also touch upon themes of discrimination, inner strength, and the reclaiming of one’s identity in a world that often overlooks the value of darker skin.”

According to a press release the producers released, the film will be “powerful and socially relevant.”

Sri Nagendra Tangala will handle production design for Mahakali, while Smaran Sai will compose the music.

Upcoming projects under PVCU

HanuMan, starring Teja Sajja, launched him into his own cinematic universe at the beginning of the year. A sequel of the same is now under production.

PVCU will also present films starring DVV Danayya’s son, Dasari Kalyan, and Balakrishna’s son Mokshagna Teja. The former’s film is touted to be Adhira based on Lord Indra. Mahakali is the fifth film to be included in the franchise yet this time it would not be directed by Prasanth.

In addition, Prasanth had planned a movie with Ranveer Singh for PVCU, but despite test shooting, the project never materialized.
